Young people, social media and mental health

Barnardo’s has published a report looking at what children, young people and practitioners say about the impact of social media on mental health and wellbeing and the social media experiences of vulnerable children in the UK. Findings from 80 Barnardo’s practitioners include: 79% said that 11-15 year olds that they work with have found cyberbullying impacted their mental health and wellbeing. Case studies and focus groups with children and young people found that those with additional life challenges are more susceptible to the negative impacts of social media as they are more likely to experience isolation from friends and family.

ADHD Foundation Training For Parents Thursday 13th June 2019

ADHD Foundation ASD training at Our Lady Immaculate

If your child has an ASD diagnosis or is on the Nuero-developmental Pathway, you are very welcome to attend. Your child does not need a diagnosis for you to attend.

It is a full day from 9.30am until 2.45pm. It will consist of interactive sessions where you can ask questions about strategies, gather information about traits or ways in which you can support your child.

I do hope as many parents as possible can come along.

There are information sheets on our website which you can download and complete.

It is open to parents of neighbouring schools too. I would be happy for you to spread the word!

Success at The Friends Of Everton Park Annual Race !

What a fabulous afternoon in Everton Park! The children were all well behaved and enjoyed the competition. They met the Lord Mayor and the trophies are in our reception for all to see! Well done to everybody involved!

Holy Communions

We couldn’t have wished for better weather today as our Yr 4 children make their Holy Communion. Fr Richard celebrated two masses, the first in Our Lady Immaculate at midday and the second at St Anthony’s. The children and their families have been preparing for months (with the help of Mrs Shepherd) to receive the sacrament of Holy Communion. Mrs Sergeant and all the staff would like to thank Fr Richard and Mrs Shepherd for the support they have given in helping make today such a special occasion for our children.

Match Report Wednesday 1st May 2019

This afternoon was the first game for our boys’ football team in the KMC “Group Cup”, a tournament in the format of the World Cup where teams compete in mini-leagues before progressing to knockouts. Our first group game was to be held against Faith, who we had already had an excellent game against in the KMC league during February! The boys couldn’t wait for the game to begin…

The game started with a flourish as a cross from Jack met with the arm of a defender and a penalty was given! Regular spot-kick taker Lennon ‘The Sniper’ Williams stepped up to take it and thumped the ball into the middle roof of the net! It was 1-0, Lennon’s 4th of the season after a 100% record with 3 penalties!
Shortly after, a brilliant second goal was converted after a throw was met by a stunning flicked through ball by captain Dan Smith. Attacking talisman Gradi Nkongolo met the volley beautifully to score and make it 2-0! The boys used this momentum to press on and add third and fourth goals inside the first half; one a volleyed finish by Jack Traynor after a cross, the other an effort by JP Salter that took a ‘slight’ deflection to result in JP’s first ever goal for OLI!
Faith did brilliantly to not let their heads drop and hit back with 3 quick goals that left co-managers Mr. Fairclough and Mr. Southworth with a problem before half-time. This is helped by Adam Gallagher who scored a 5th goal from close-range by lifting the ball into the top corner for his 5th goal of the season!
After apologising to the referee for Adam’s celebration, the team dug deep as the second half began. Dan switched to defensive role and showed his experience at the back. Jonny provided wonderful tackles against fierce attacking opposition and continuously made clearances. Luke Buckley adapted his game to help the team bolster its defence and this proved very valuable, eventually resulting in a through ball being slotted to Gradi who finished from point-blank range to put the score at 6-3.
With 5 minutes left, striker Ryan Lennon thundered a shot off the bar denying him a goal that he so greatly deserved. Ryan had taken part in his best game in an OLI shirt and was met with a big round of applause when he was substituted before full-time. Faith kept their hopes alive with a headed goal to put the deficit at 2 goals, but on the edge of full-time, Gradi scored a rebound that sealed his first ever hat-trick for OLI and his 8th goal this year!
With one final push forward from striker Tom Farrell, the game ended 7-4. A great game to watch for the spectators and a really good win for the boys to begin this competition.
MOTM: From Mr. Southworth, Ryan Lennon for excellent work-rate, passing and attacking threat.
MOTM: From Mr. Fairclough, Gradi Nkongolo for a brilliant hat-trick.

Social media, mental health and wellbeing.

The All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on social media and young people’s mental health and wellbeing has published a report. Findings include: social media can have a range of positive effects, but children who spend time on social networking sites are more likely to have symptoms of mental ill health than those who do not; and social media is seen by many young people as having a negative impact on their self esteem. Recommendations include: establish a duty of care on social media companies with registered UK users aged 24 and under; create a Social Media Health Alliance to fund research, educational initiatives and establish clearer guidance for the public; review whether the ‘addictive’ nature of social media is sufficient for official disease classification; and commission longitudinal research into understanding the impact of social media on young people’s mental health and wellbeing.

Match Report 21/3/2019 The match ended 5-0: an excellent result!

Our boys’ football team played another KMC League match today at Heron Eccles. After a long drive, the boys were eager to get started at attempt to win their 5th league game in a row! There was a delay with the start of the game as the referee was delayed, so Mr. Fairclough took the whistle and left Miss Harland in the manager’s role…

The boys made a quick start that was rewarded within seconds as Dan Smith was brought down inside the box and a penalty was awarded! Lennon “The Sniper” Williams (named for being deadly at long range) proved that he could also finish from the spot as he slid his penalty into the bottom right corner for 1-0!

OLI continued to press on, with attackers Lucas, Jack, Adam, Dan, Luke and Gradi all combining really well as they were brought on and off the pitch as substitutes. Shortly after, a goal of the season contender was ripped in from 20 yards out. Gradi was under pressure from defenders and produced a curling effort whilst falling over that found the top corner for a truly stunning goal! It was 2-0, but not for long. Jack Traynor’s one-on-one chance produced a third goal and the boys went into the second half 3-0 up.

The boys had won their last 4 games, but were yet to keep a clean sheet this season. With that in mind, defenders Jonny, Tom, Oscar and JP dug in brilliantly to assist keeper Ayman, who himself was having a great game, saving a one-on-one chance with his fingertips.

Adam Gallagher got a slight touch on a cross and found the bottom corner to score his 3rd goal of the season and OLI’s 4th of the game. With minutes remaining in the game, Jack Traynor scored his second goal of the game with a wonderful curling effort from the edge of the box. The match ended 5-0: an excellent result!

Many thanks to KMC Sports again, as well as Carleton House for fielding a young, energetic team with lots of promise and excellent sportsmanship.
