The NSPCC will be visiting our school to talk to parents about online safety. If you have any concerns or would like to know more about how we can protect our children in relation to online safety please come along to the short session organised by the NSPCC & O2.
The session will take place in the media suite on the Tuesday 6.3.18 at 9:00am.
Everyone is welcome!
Friday saw our second session of Building A Bridge to Books. We looked at making our first book and the children became authors and decorated their books themselves. Their parents helped teach the children lots of early reading behaviours and it was so lovely to watch the children engaging their parents in a love of reading. Next week we are making a cookery book with our favourite recipes in!
We had some fantastic results at cross country tonight! Cold conditions faced both our girls’ and boys’ teams in the race taking in most of Wavertree park but that didn’t stop us posting our best results this season. With our final race at Sefton Park next week, all the pupils have set themselves targets to beat this week’s positions!
Boys:
Bobby – 18th
Ruben – 41st
Harrison – 43rd
Scott – 45th
Dylan – 65th
Thomas – 70th
Girls:
Macey – 53rd
Poppy – 60th
Shelby – 80th
During our Friday Celebration Assembly the Internet Safety Poster winners were announced. The judging was really difficult as the quality was so high and we even awarded highly commended prizes to the runners up. The winners were judged on their effectiveness as information posters and judged on how much they stood out and advertised the theme of Internet Safety. Look out for the photos of the winners coming soon.
A huge thanks to the year 6 boys who participated in a 6-a-side tournament today at the LFC foundation.
The boys were exciting to play in the mini-league format, and with scouts watching on they wanted to put their best efforts in to represent OLI and possibly enter a regional final!
The league consisted of playing 4 small matches with a team of 6 and 2 subs. The first game began with a bang, as captain Joe McFarlane-Wells scored a stunning hat-trick, added to with a goal by number 10 Bobby Mitchell. The match ended 4-1 and the boys began their league campaign off wonderfully.
MOTM: Ruben McNeil
The boys hoped that their good form would continue to the second match, which proved to be true when a long range effort (maybe a pass?) from Bobby Mitchell landed in the top corner! Unfortunately OLI conceded a late goal from a fast, low effort. Billy Smith hit the frame late on which unfortunately meant the game ended 1-1. 4 points out of 6 meant that it was still all to play for!
MOTM: Francis Westhead
The most entertaining game was undoubtedly the 3rd one. It was an abysmal start for OLI, the late equaliser from the previous game resulting in a slow start that saw the boys go 2-0 down. However, a peach of a volley from Zac Abbou made it 2-1, before a stunning solo goal from Joe saw OLI equalise. Joe took on 3 defenders down the left wing before rounding the keeper and slotting the ball in. Dribbling past 2 thirds of the opposing team to score meant that Joe won the “goal of the day” award from the event organisers. The game ended 2-2.
MOTM: Joe McFarlane-Wells
The final match was against the league leaders and a tense first half ended goalless. Zac Abbou came on at half-time and scored with his 2nd touch! A truly masterful decision from the coach… An equaliser quickly went in that saw another tight draw end the league campaign. Excellent defense from Jake, Kamil and Ruben limited the league leaders to just 1 goal.
MOTM: Zac Abbou
The boys finished the day undefeated. This saw them finish 3rd in their league. If I were an LFC scout, I’d sign them all. Their sportsmanship and attitude were flawless and it was a pleasure to be there representing OLI with them.
All the children are really engaging in the variety of learning activities to help us all stay safe on line. KS1 have been watching “Meet the Malwares” and creating their safety posters whilst Year 6 are watching “The best and worst of life online”. https://www.bbc.com/ownit/its-personal/mean-comments-film

It is with sadness that we learnt this weekend of the passing of Miss Carmel Short.
Miss Short was a teacher at our school from 1982 to 2010 and many of our families will remember her with great fondness, as do many of our staff who worked alongside her, or were taught by her.
She had a great passion for history, astronomy and literature, particularly for fantasy fiction and led our Harry Potter Club for many years.
Miss Short had a bubbly personality and a great sense of humour which she shared with the children and consequently many of our parents who are past pupils always ask after Miss Short and talk about her as “one of my favourite teachers”.
On behalf of the governors, staff and pupils, both past and present, I will be sending a Mass card to her family and as a school community we will keep her family and friends in our prayers.
May she rest in peace.
Yours sincerely
Mrs Sergeant
We will be launching our annual poster competition supporting Internet Safety Day on Tuesday February 6th 2018. The prizes will be just as good as always and the winning poster will be made into a school poster and displayed around the school. Good Luck!

In January, staff in Year 5/6 will be holding SATs booster sessions for the Year 6 pupils to attend every Wednesday after school till 4.30pm (starting from 10th January). These sessions are very important and provide key small group teaching, which has proved vital in pupils’ preparations for the end of key stage two tests. We expect all pupils in Year 6 to attend. They will receive a drink and snack at the end of the school day. Thank you for your ongoing support. Merry Christmas.
Tomorrow is the final day in school before the Christmas break and pupils may wear their own clothes. Merry Christmas!
See the poster below for a Christmas Party held at the BNENC centre on Breckfield Road North.
