Spelling Bee

Spelling Bee

Groups of children from Four Oaks and The Beacon visited us yesterday to take part in an inter-school ‘Spelling Bee’. Each school had three children from year five and six and they had to face each other to spell words from the statutory word list for those years, such as mischievous, profession and pronunciation. Our children did really well and as usual did our school proud. They can’t wait to have another try!

If you would like see some photographs, go to the ‘Curriculum’ tab, click on ‘Writing’ on the bar down the side then ‘Spelling Bee’.

Books, books and more books!

Before we return to school why don’t you take some time to visit a library? We have lots of inspiring libraries in Liverpool  but one of the most breath taking is Liverpool Central Library. It’s just between The World Museum and the Walker Art Gallery  with really easy bus links. With over 10,000 books to choose from , your whole family is sure to find something they will enjoy reading .

It’s an ideal place to visit with children , especially the DISCOVER section on the ground floor which has a special under 5’s area , sections for children 5-7 then 8-11 with author sections and picture books , it often has structured  activities during the day so it might be worth checking those out on line .Free computers are available for children to help with school work, find things out, or just have fun. Prefer listening and watching? Then head for the children’s DVDs and talking books on CD.

The READ section  is where you will find a good book to take on holiday, to read on the bus or train or simply to take yourself away from everyday life. There is so much to choose from crime, adventure, science fiction and much more.Browse the audio books and language courses or use the e-books service. All loans are FREE and it is free to join. You can check out the iPads for quick email and internet access.

If you are interested in  finding out about your family history or discovering the history of your house, street or district then the ARCHIVE section is for you .There are fabulous collections of unique and rare archives from the 13th century to the present day which tell Liverpool’s story.  Photographs, maps, newspapers, directories, and much more, record the lives of Liverpudlians across the centuries.

The IMAGINE  section (also on the ground floor) includes a multi media zone , here the children can listen to music by choosing from CDs covering contemporary rock and pop, country, folk, jazz, blues, world music and classical  , browse the internet or play Xbox 360 games . You can find feature films and television programmes on DVD. .

In the TREASURES section you can take a look at the oldest book in the world , or the most expensive book in the world . It is where the famous collections of rare books are kept, housed in the magnificent Hornby Library and Oak Room. View the impressive Picton Reading Room, one of the most beautiful libraries in the world. For many visitors, the star attraction will be seeing a copy of John James Audubon’s massive ‘Birds of America’, described as the greatest natural history book ever produced.

At the end of your trip , check out the amazing external terrace overlooking St John’s Gardens , go to the third floor and take a look over the city from a very different view !

Party Day!

The children have really enjoyed this morning. They have danced, played games and eaten lots of party food! Thank you all for your continuous support and generosity throughout the year, we really do appreciate it, as do the children!

We hope that you enjoy your Summer and we will see you all in September!

Year Two Graduation!

Congratulations to Year Two who graduated this morning! The graduation assembly was wonderful and both parents and staff were so proud of you all!

“Best trip ever !”

As the title suggests , our trip today was descried by our children as “The best trip ever !” Well, the sun shone on us today and as usual the children made us proud . Some of our year four children met the Lord Mayor of Wirral and a teacher from another school commented that the behaviour of our children was exemplary. We met tarantulas , racoons , lizards and a huge snake. (Don’t worry though they were with a handler so we were perfectly safe !)

We are used to playing in front of a spectacular view but if you look at the photographs , the view at Wirral country park was amazing too ! If you look carefully at some of the other photographs you will notice some bulging pockets at the beach , we have enjoyed learning about the stone age so much we couldn’t help but collect some more stones !

After a busy day learning , playing , exploring , digging, walking, climbing , travelling , discovering and sight-seeing it’s no wonder we thoroughly enjoyed it !

The wildflowers are here!

The wildflowers that some of our children planted during the Spring Term have started to blossom in Everton Park! The children who are going on the attendance trip next Wednesday will be able to enjoy the flowers which have helped to add colour to the park. Year 6 have been busy exploring the importance of wildflowers for our community and environment through an art workshop – you can see pictures in our gallery on the Upper Key Stage two summer news  ! There will be a free family fun day held at the park on Saturday 18th July, see details on flyers in our school office .

Play Day at The Lighthouse

Year four got the unique opportunity to perform with lots of other children from across the City at The Lighthouse today. A rock band to accompany them gave them the ideal chance to show what they have learnt with Mr Storey over the past year.

James and Free the Children

James from ‘Free the Children ‘ came to school today to tell us about the organisation he works for. He told us the story of how it was set up in 1995 by some twelve year olds who knew they could make a difference to the world .He showed us a couple of films and inspired us to all make a difference.

If you can not provide your child with a t-shirt just let a member of the Key Stage One team know and we will provide your child with a wrist band to represent their team.

i-sing performance!

Children from across Key Stage One have been selected to take part in a performance in the Philharmonic Hall. The performance will take place on Monday 29th June 2015. We have already received most of the permission slips back, thank you for your co-operation. Your child will not need a packed lunch as school will provide them with one.
