Chinese New Year

We have learnt about how Chinese New Year is celebrated.  We enjoyed role playing in our very own Chinese restaurant, taking each other’s order and then preparing the food in the kitchen. We talked about the different ways in which Chinese New Year is traditionally celebrated and listened to the story of the Chinese Zodiac.  At the end of the week we had a special treat, breaking and tasting our own fortune cookies! We loved reading the messages that were hidden inside!

Mother Language Day

Reception had a  brilliant day celebrating Mother Language Day, with the children having the opportunity to learn about the home languages and culture of our friends.

In Mrs Culshaw’s class Hana’s mum came in to class to talk about her home country, Iran.  We learnt about the traditional costumes worn during special occasions, the capital city and how school in Iran is different to the UK. Hana’s mum told us that she can speak three languages! Persian, Turkish and Arabic, the children were very impressed! We finally learnt how to say words like ‘mum’ and ‘friend’ in Persian.

Lucas O and his mum, who is originally from Romania, sent us in some delicious Romanian pastries that they had baked at home. Lucas told us how he made the pastries and talked about the ingredients he had used.  We really enjoyed getting to taste them!

In Mrs Stalker’s class, Wahji’s dad came in to talk about his life as the captain of a ship in his home country, it was so interesting and the children were really keen to ask lots of questions! Wahji’s dad also taught us how to say some Arabic words. Elon’s dad also spoke to the class about the important work he does within the local community and spoke to the children in his home language, Kurdish.

Overall the day was an enriching experience for the children and they were able to gain a wealth of knowledge about the home language and culture of their peers.

We continue to be an Inclusion Quality Mark Centre of Excellence !🎉🍾🎆

Attached is the feedback from the IQM assessment day. It is so lovely and everyone should be so proud of their achievements and the feedback we received. It is attached for you to all read in full detail BUT I have pulled out a few quotes that will inspire!
Thank you to you all; as the Assessor commented:

“OLI has a deep and continued commitment to inclusion.”

A parent said, ‘they don’t know how good they are because it’s so natural.’”

There is a lively atmosphere in the school canteen where excellent food is prepared by friendly staff.

Children attending OLI certainly get a good deal.”

“The IQM targets set and achieved at OLI serve to complement and enhance the inclusive ethos of the school.”

“They work well together and ‘enjoy a laugh.’ This is something that I personally value greatly. A happy staff means happy pupils.”

“I was particularly struck by how older children engage with each other in lessons. As 1 pupil speaks, the class would turn to show interest and display active listening.”

“It was an absolute pleasure to spend a day with staff and children, and I feel inspired and enthused to trial ideas in my own school.”

“Comments from stakeholders’ centre around the school being ‘warm,’ ‘amazing,’ and ‘like home.’ I would fully agree with these quotes. All staff, including cooks, the site manager, learning support, and Governors, clearly articulate the same ethos and enjoy being there. External support staff expressed how this is ‘comfortably the best school they work in.”

“Our Lady Immaculate Catholic Primary School is an exceptionally inclusive school.”

“It was lovely to see the early years children practising self-regulation through peer massage as part of the MISP programme. (Massage in Schools Programme). Clearly, this is embedded as a regular feature, and very young children were showing care and empathy towards their peers.”

“Observation of ZOR in Early Years area showed staff well-deployed to support children unable to fully mix with mainstream, but still receiving entitlement.”

“There is a lot of evidence that staff at OLI are very well trained,”

“Diversity in the curriculum is apparent”

Thank you everyone!
