Swimming and water safety
Our children are taught in their swimming sessions to:
- swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
- perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
Children from Year 5 – 6 take part in swimming lessons at Everton Park. We also buy into ‘top-up’ swimming lessons, for our Year 6 pupils, to help them to achieve swimming at least 25m, through focused coaching in smaller groups.
The Government aim for all children to be able to swim at least 25m, when they leave Year 6. At the conclusion of our swimming provision in Summer term 2021, 46% of our year 6 leavers were able to confidently swim the expected distance of 25 metres. This statistic is taken in the context of the COVID 19 pandemic meaning that children had limited access to swimming during the lockdown in Spring term in addition to our ‘Top-Up Swimming’ programme focusing on improving swimming outcomes not being able to take place.
