Our Lady Immaculate Catholic Primary School

Spring Term 2020

World Book Day

We just wanted to say a huge thank you for all the help and support you have given your children to make World Book Day such a success today. The children looked amazing and we have thoroughly enjoyed listening to, and sharing books all day. As part of the ‘Liverpool Reads’ initiative we took part in a city wide ‘Drop Everything And Read’ this morning, which meant that whatever the children were doing at that point , they stopped and read!

During our English lessons we have been reading ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ and decided we just had to make our own character hand puppets. We have loved doing this during our DT topic this half term . We have learned so many new skills and tested our resilience whilst making hand puppets. Sewing can be really tricky but by following our designs and using the correct equipment we have finished products.

We were also able to link our English book within our science lessons too. We have explored the best uses of different materials when building habitats for humans and animals. We completed sorted and categorising activities and investigated the best materials to build a strong, waterproof den for Mr Fox.

Year One Fun!

During this half term we loved discovering our new book ‘Stuck’ which was actually stuck up high in a tree! As a team we had to think about ways to get it out of the tree and made a very long list of fantastic ideas. This experience hooked the children into the story from the very beginning and led to some fantastic writing across genres including: Lists, mind maps of adjectives linked to feelings, creative writing and much more!

Our daily maths sessions are supporting children’s independence when journaling their own methods for working out problems. There is some brilliant team work going on and very impressive active learning using practical resources.

We have been learning lots about the UK, locating and finding capital cities on a map as well as finding out about weather patterns. Children have loved doing a daily weather diary and thanks to our great British weather they had quite a variation over the week!
